This workshop, hosted by the Non-timber Forest Product Exchange Programme, will present and share experiences about the sustainable management of Asian bees, their role in forest conservation and their importance for supporting marginal livelihoods.

 

 

Beekeeping and honey hunting in the forests of south east Asia

Talks, films and exhibits about this fascinating topic will be presented to stimulate interest and debate about the value of forests for bees and beekeepers.

 

 

Asian Apiculture Association meeting

Everyone is welcome to attend this meeting to hear about the work and plans of this active association.

 

 

Honey trade by small producer groups  Symposium 1

Thursday 17 September, 14.30 to 18.30. Barthez room.

 

This Symposium will consider the importance of the honey trade for income generation for small-scale beekeepers, with particular focus on how small producers can access markets and the development of supply chains. Papers on poverty alleviation and appropriate methods will be presented, from Asia, Middle East and Africa.

 

 

Beekeeping for Rural Development   Plenary Session

Friday 18 September, 09.00 to 13.00. Berlioz room.

 

Key speaker Professor Ben Oldroyd will present the keynote lecture on conservation of honey bees in Asia. Other speakers include Professor Mardan on honey hunting in Malaysia, and Professor Gard Otis on project work in Vietnam. Other stimulating presentations include stingless beekeeping in Kenya and organic beekeeping in Serbia.  

 

 

Cooperatives and networks    Symposium 2

Saturday 19 September, 09.00 to 13.00. Barthez room.

 

On Saturday morning the role and importance of beekeepers working together in cooperatives will be discussed with speakers from Central and South America, Turkey, Russia, and France.

 

 

 

The Meeting Point for everyone interested in beekeeping and development

All week at ApiExpo, Level 3 stands 3N04 and 3N05.

 

Anyone interested in beekeeping and development can meet like-minded people for ideas and inspiration at the Meeting Point which is located at the stand of the Commission for Beekeeping and Rural Development in the ApiExpo. Go to Level 3, stand 3N04. You are also welcome to come and meet Bees for Development Trust and partner NGOs, at the next stand 3N05.

 

 

Natural beekeeping: placing sustainability at the heart of beekeeping practice

Friday 18 September, 14.00 to 18.00. Room: Joffre 5, Level 1.

 

At this informal meeting proponents of natural beekeeping will have a chance to explain their approaches and meet like-minded natural beekeepers. Ideas which will be aired and discussed may include top-bar hive beekeeping, the Abbe Warre hive, the importance of respecting a colony as a whole and not as interchangeable parts, and the benefits of swarming.
